Proton Pump Inhibitors

Protein-pump inhibitors, also known as PPIs, are a group of drugs meant to reduce stomach acid production. When acid in the esophagus and stomach is high, it can cause ulcers and pain. PPIs work to prevent those ulcers from forming and heal ulcers that already exist.

Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers, Barrett’s Esophagus and similar gastrointestinal issues are prescribed PPIs to minimize or eliminate their symptoms. PPIs are an extremely common prescription given by doctors all over the country. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that taking a PPI may lead to chronic kidney disease, which is when your kidneys slowly lose function.

How Risky are PPIs?

PPIs are one of the most popular drugs prescribed to patients in the country. Because of this, there is a lot of data to back up the claims that the drugs in PPIs lead to kidney disease. A recent study showed that the risk for developing kidney disease increased by 50 percent in those taking PPIs. Similar studies found the same results, going even further to point out that the longer a patient takes a PPI, the worse off they may be.

In addition to kidney disease, those taking PPIs have also been shown to have heart attacks or stomach cancer.

What Can I Do?

If you were, or still are, taking PPIs and develop kidney disease or other health issues, it’s imperative that you contact an attorney. You are not alone in this fight and if you did develop health issues, you may be entitled for compensation for your pain and our team will fight for you to ensure you receive it.
