Bone Cement
When you have a bone fracture, you experience pain, tenderness, swelling and at times, the loss of function to the affected area. To repair a bone fracture, doctors have a few different options they can use. A popular option is the use of bone cement, which fills the space between the joint and the bone, eliminating pain and future movement problems.
Bone cement is usually in the form of a plastic and is used most often for patients getting hip surgery or total knee replacement, but is common for all types of joint-related surgeries. Although there are many success stories that have included the use of bone cement, there has also been the realization of a new disease, directly caused by the introduction of bone cement to the body.

Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome
This disease, called bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) is a life-threatening disorder that occurs directly after bone cement is placed in the body. If the bones negatively react to the cement, they will release marrow and fat into the bloodstream rapidly, causing clogged arteries and the chance for cardiac arrest, pulmonary embolism or death. Those that do survive BCIS often have lingering, life-long health issues.
